On October 30th Worshipful Master Michel Gomez and the Brothers of Union Lodge No. 5 held a Brunch Fundraiser for the Stamford Police Departments K-9 Unit. The Lodge hoped to raise $1200.00 to purchase a new Kevlar Vest for K-9 Officer Loki who is the newest member of the Unit. Laboring to bring this event to fruition the Brothers could not have been happier with the weather. It seems Mother Nature also loves Dogs, Freemasonry & Police. The Sunday morning was unseasonable warm and the sun shone bright all day. The food was wonderful with pancakes, bacon, eggs, parfait, soup, turkey clubs, and mimosas. The Brothers would like to acknowledge WB Domenic Corbo sister Maria Joyce for her skills in the kitchen; her labors made the day run smother. Being a dog owner and lover she wanted to participate. With the help of donations from Acacia Lodge No. 85 & Harmony Lodge No. 67 the amount for the vest was quickly achieved and surpassed. The guests in attendance loved that the Officers of the K-9 Unit were able to perform demonstrations of the dogs abilities. Questions and answers were shared and information obtained. All felt a sense of community and a worthy objective.

Now this event in itself is a wonderful story. Just 5 days later is when it becomes even more wonderful. You see I was contacted by Sgt. Seth O’Brien of the SPD K-9 Unit and asked a favor. It seems that a young man, Finn Murphy was upset that he missed the brunch. He was so enthused to participate he told his father who is a Stamford Firefighter that he was willing to donate his birthday money ($100.00) for the cause. I, being overwhelmed at the young mans generosity gladly invited the Murphy family to attend the check presentation prior to the regular Stated Communication of December 7th. The Murphy family joined the Brothers for supper. The presentation was delayed slightly as Officer Pavia and Loki were called to duty on a disturbance call just blocks away from the Lodge. All was well on the call. Upon there return WM Gomez met Officer Pavia and his highly trained K-9 Loki in the East with Finn Murphy for the presentation of a check for $2565.39. The SPD K-9 Unit was overwhelmed by the hospitality and generosity of the Lodge. The Murphy family has given all Freemasons a beacon of light to aspire to, we should all strive to be more like this young man Finn Murphy.
